Valley Lodge

Both entrances are mediated by mud rooms—practical transitional spaces that help retain warmth and cleanliness. One mud room integrates a dining nook for four, oriented toward the views. Inside, a mezzanine level makes efficient use of volume, offering storage and intimate spaces. The guest room is anchored by a wood fireplace and a small mezzanine that frames the gable end, perfectly capturing the Himalayan horizon. Another bedroom extends into a self-sufficient unit with its own kitchen and a mezzanine sleeping loft. The Valley Lodge is envisioned as a compact, energy-efficient retreat—cozy yet layered, with spaces designed to be experiential. By employing local stone, wood, and construction methods, the project not only respects the vernacular but also creates an architecture that feels rooted, warm, and distinctly of Almora’s landscape.

Set amidst the hilly terrain on the outskirts of Almora, the Valley Lodge is designed to immerse itself in the natural landscape of conifer forests while opening up to sweeping views of the distant Himalayas. The contoured site, sparsely dotted with trees and accessed by a town road along its edge, sets the framework for a two-part design: a compact lodge at the base of the hill for guests, and the main house positioned at the highest point to command panoramic vistas. The built form is oriented along the east–west axis, maximizing exposure to sunlight while framing the grandeur of the Himalayan range. A front and rear verandah, linked by a side walkway, provide seamless connections to the outdoors and overlook the town road below. Constructed with 18-inch thick load-bearing walls of locally sourced stone, the architecture draws from regional building traditions, ensuring thermal comfort and a timeless character.
