Nirvana : Joy
The farmhouse is constructed with CSEB blocks manufactured on site, combined with black basalt stone strip foundations and finished in mud plaster. The 12-inch thick earth walls provide significant thermal mass, lowering indoor temperatures by up to 7°C in the summer. The roof is fabricated in mild steel sections and clad with terracotta tiles, while natural oxides introduce warm earthy hues to selected interiors. After the 2018 floods, the farmhouse has stood as a model for the durability of natural materials and vernacular construction choices, proving that ecological methods can coexist with contemporary comfort. Nirvana Farmhouse is less a static dwelling and more a dialogue between built form, shifting scales of landscape, and the resilience of the land itself.
Located on a two-acre farmland in Khadavali, Nirvana Farmhouse is a 3,000 sq.ft. retreat conceived around the idea of connecting living spaces to the larger landscape. A central axis runs through the house, aligning views toward the farmland and the distant Bhatsa River, while private spaces—bedrooms, toilets, and kitchen—are tucked around this spine. Entry into the house is through an enclosed courtyard, a transitional threshold that opens into a semi-open living room framing the landscape beyond. Both bedrooms and the living area flow out to a swimming pool oriented toward the fields, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. The spatial sequence is imagined as a series of shifting landscapes, with free-standing walls and varying levels creating an experience of openness even within enclosure. A seasonal stream passing through the courtyard was carefully integrated into the orientation of the structure, reinforcing the connection between architecture and land.
