Hill top Home
The residence is composed of three interconnected blocks, oriented east–west to align with the Valley Lodge and to optimize sunlight and Himalayan views. Designed for a family of four, the program balances private retreat with shared gathering spaces. The ground floor accommodates a social core with a spacious living area anchored by a fire hearth, alongside a guest bedroom, staff quarters, kitchen, garage, and a central staircase and lift. Deeper within the plan, two private bedrooms create more intimate zones. The first floor hosts additional ensuite bedrooms, a private kitchen, and direct access to an indoor pool—framing the mountains while extending year-round use. Large north-facing glazing and carefully placed openings invite sunlight and frame sweeping vistas. Construction follows the vernacular palette established in the Valley Lodge: 18-inch thick stone load-bearing walls, expressed timber trusses at the gable ends, sloping roofs, and wooden columns supporting cantilevers. This combination of local materials and structural clarity grounds the architecture in its setting while providing a contemporary expression of comfort and permanence.
The Hilltop Home crowns the contoured site overlooking Almora, anchoring a larger ensemble that includes the Valley Lodge at the base, a mid-site cabin nestled among trees, and a caretaker’s lodge with an adjoining greenhouse. Access to the home is defined by an internal road paved in locally sourced stone, with retaining walls that create natural terraces and pockets of green, allowing for farming and planting to integrate with the built landscape.
