Govandi Art Festival ' 23
Natwar Parekh Colony in Govandi is a dense residential settlement often described as an urban jungle. For a community arts festival, its everyday parking lot was reimagined as a vibrant cultural hub. The brief called for a main display area, reception space, vendor booths, workshop zones, and a performance area to host numerous activities. The aim was to design an interactive festival pavilion that welcomed residents—especially children—into an environment of creativity and play. By transforming an otherwise utilitarian space, the project offered the community a refreshing and inclusive cultural experience.

The design emphasized sustainability, reuse, and affordability. Bamboo and fabric formed the primary materials, chosen for their low cost, lightness, and ease of assembly. Bamboo frames supported standees, vendor stalls, and temporary structures, while fabric was suspended to create shade and add vibrancy. Circulation was carefully planned to keep the space open and accessible, encouraging exploration and movement between zones. At the center of the design, a semicircular stage became the performance area, anchoring the festival and providing a platform for music, theater, and community-led events. A photo gallery with a meandering path guided visitors back toward activity zones, ensuring the experience remained interconnected and dynamic.

Interactive details added liveliness to the pavilion. Paper fans decorated the entrance portal, creating a playful walkway that introduced visitors to the festival atmosphere. Workshop areas were made child-friendly with low seating and informal gathering spaces to encourage participation. Fabrics draped from balconies above transformed the harsh residential backdrop into a shaded, welcoming arena. At its core, the design was guided by three priorities—space planning, material choice, and activity zoning—together creating a flexible, eco-conscious festival pavilion that turned an everyday parking lot into a space of art, performance, and collective joy.
