Shikhandi
The set for Shikhandi was envisioned around the principles of modularity, adaptability, and sustainability. Designed for easy assembly and disassembly, it allowed for rapid installation without requiring specialized supervision, making it both practical and efficient. Bamboo stalks and retractable bamboo mats formed the primary structural and visual elements, creating layered backdrops and flexible transitional spaces. These natural materials were selected for their tactile warmth, visual richness, and environmental sensitivity, reflecting a conscious approach to sustainable design. Complementing the bamboo, removable vinyl mats with rangoli-inspired motifs subtly defined floor zones, guiding performers while maintaining cohesion across the stage.

A key component of the set was a drum table constructed from crisscrossed bamboo and secured with nut-and-bolt joinery. This interactive element introduced verticality and dynamic spatiality, allowing performers to climb, engage, and create layered compositions on stage. Alongside this, a bamboo fire torch prop added atmospheric depth, evoking texture and a sense of time without dictating the narrative. The retractable bamboo mats also allowed the stage to transform seamlessly between scenes, creating intimate pockets and open areas as required by performance flow.

The overall design emphasized flexibility, immersion, and a tactile relationship with materials. Lightweight, modular components enabled adaptability while retaining expressive qualities, supporting a range of performance needs without overwhelming the stage. By balancing practical considerations with thoughtful detailing and a sustainable material palette, the set offered an environment that was both visually compelling and functionally versatile. The design invited performers and audiences alike into a space where natural materials, modular construction, and interactive elements combined to create an engaging and memorable theatrical experience.
